Detroit: Opportunity City

Less than a decade ago, most had written Detroit off the map. Today, rekindled and reborn by those who saw opportunity in the face of disparity, it's a bustling hub of entrepreneurial action.

Detroit now plays host to one of the most vibrant startup communities in the U.S., and it’s no surprise. It was the dreamers, innovators and entrepreneurs who brought it back from the grave. So, when it came time to choose a city for Youth Entrepreneurs’ annual YE Summit and YEedu events, Detroit seemed a no-brainer. The city embodies everything YE teaches students and its educators about the entrepreneurial mindset.

This summer, hundreds of students, alumni and educators will have the opportunity to dig deep into Detroit’s thriving culture, meeting those at the helm of the transformation and getting inspired by their stories.

"We're excited to immerse educators in Detroit's rise, fall and renewal through experiential learning and contextual storytelling," says Matt Silverthorne, YE training and curriculum manager. "Educators will feel, touch and taste the rich history and transformation of some of Detroit's unique neighborhoods."

Attendees will get to explore the themes that are shaping Detroit on one of the Detroit Experience Factory's unique tours. “They’ll see distressed neighborhoods that are developing unique solutions to the challenges they face,” says founder Jeanette Pierce. “By the end of the day, they will have an insider’s perspective of how innovation and entrepreneurship are helping transform Detroit.”

Visitors will also experience The Henry Ford, an internationally recognized hub of history, ingenuity and innovation. They’ll also meet face-to-face with local entrepreneurs and get a taste of the city’s budding entrepreneurial spirit. “Detroit is big enough to matter in the world but small enough where you can matter in it,” Pierce says. “Because everyone has the opportunity to have a positive impact on their community here.”

We can’t imagine a better place to take a summer break and dig into some self-exploration, continued education and all-around rejuvenation than hitting the reset button in the city that just did.
